Community Question: Bored. Job Shadowing?

Community Question is a category inspired by you. Here and there readers write in with questions that are better served by the varied, experiential knowledge of those who read and contribute in the comments. Please respond to this post in the comments, but if you have a question for the community email it to Heather.

The following question is from Brian C.

“We need some ideas for helping our 14-year-old, 10th-grade son, start deciding a career path. We homeschool, and he is enrolled in a long distance learning program. Since he makes perfect scores with little or no effort, he quickly gets bored with new subjects. He took a robotic engineering class last Spring, and we thought he had finally found something to hold his interest, but he mastered it too quickly and soon became bored. Our son has told us that just because he’s really good at something doesn’t mean he enjoys doing it.

He always enjoys new things in the beginning but once it becomes too easy for him, he loses interest. A family member suggested job shadowing. We do not have any idea how to approach this. We are looking for suggestions for how to direct him and how to go about finding a program for job shadowing.

Does your child have a mentor in their area of interest? If so, how did you find them? Have they participated in job shadowing? What suggestions do you have for Brian?
