Community Question: One at a time? Curriculum?

Community Question is a category inspired by you. Here and there readers write in with questions that are better served by the varied, experiential knowledge of those who read and contribute in the comments. Please respond to this post in the comments, but if you have a question for the community email it to Heather.

The following question is from Sara K.

“My 10-year-old son is in 5th-grade at a local private school. While the school has been great for him because it’s small, it’s also difficult for him to find a group of friends to fit into precisely because it is so small. He has diagnosed social anxiety disorder which means being in social situations is both hard and good for him. At any rate, we are considering homeschooling him. We have another son who might want to be homeschooled if his older brother gets to stay home.

I’m wondering whether people recommend starting off at home with all school-aged kids, or whether there’s a steep enough learning curve that perhaps having one child at home for a semester or year might be better. I’m also curious what people recommend for curriculum starting out with one, and possibly adding more students (grades next year would be 2nd-3rd grade reader and Pre-K) in the following years.”

Would you start off with all kids or suggest pulling them out one by one? What about curriculum for a family with multiple-aged students? Time to weigh in for Sara!
