With all the back to school ad campaigns, sales, and preparation going on both online and off, it is hard to remember that IT IS STILL SUMMER.
When I was a kid, I looked forward to picking my school supplies and selecting new outfits for the upcoming school year, but when August arrived the “get-ready” for school made the last few weeks of summer as sweet as its first weeks.
Each trip to the city pool became more precious than before because in just a few weeks I would be sitting in a desk instead of the edge of the deep end. Running for the ice cream truck was more prized because its tinkering song would soon only sing on Saturday afternoons. Before I knew it, my late morning bike rides to the park and sweaty nights playing tag until the streetlights came on would turn into foggy mornings waiting at the bus stop and afternoons filled with homework.
But what I knew I would miss the most was the hours tucked into the corner of a couch reading when the afternoon heat chased everyone indoors, or late at night by flashlight underneath quickly constructed forts.
The good news is that the summer has not left us yet, nor the opportunity to win a set of Elementary School Summer Readers from Sonlight!
These books are not available in any of the Sonlight curriculum packages and have been carefully hand-selected after months of reading by Sarita Holzmann and her daughter Jonelle Lilly. Though the two sets are divided into “Boy” and “Girl” Summer Readers, Sonlight is quick to say that all the books will appeal to a wide range of audiences, but these are simply general age and gender suggestions to help parents choose.
“From mystery and mad guests (and what’s up with all those ducks?) to gold fever and treacherous treks, from tales of King Arthur (meet the Round Table’s most ill-fated knight) to the Boxcar Children’s beginnings at Fair Meadow Farm, these books will engage your elementary-age boys.”
The Boys Elementary Summer Reader Set includes:
Floors
A Tale of Gold
The Adventures of Sir Balin the Ill-Fated
The Boxcar Children Beginning
“Whether stranded on a deserted island, designing their own fashionable attire, espousing brilliant ideas or writing heartfelt poetry, the strong, spirited gals in these lively stories are sure to captivate girls of elementary age and interests.”
The Girls Elementary Summer Reader Set includes:
Baby Island
Sew Zoey Ready to Wear
Violet Mackeral’s Outside-the Box Set
Gooney Bird is so Absurd
